On the 26th of November 2024, the eagerly awaited Cybersecurity and Data Protection Awareness Event held at the GIZ-DTC Career Center, Kigali, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of over 90 participants, including SMEs, industry experts, and government stakeholders. Hosted in collaboration with National Cyber Security Authority and GIZ-Digital Transformation Center as organizing partners, the event created a dynamic platform to explore into Rwanda’s growing commitment to digital safety, privacy, and compliance.

1. Welcome Remarks
The Managing Director of NetFella, Sadrah Irasubiza delivered an inspiring welcome address, emphasizing the significance of digital safety and cybersecurity for Rwanda’s growth and transformation.
2. First Presentation and Q&A
Topic: Strengthening Data Protection and Privacy in Rwanda: A Roadmap for Securing Digital Transformation
Presented by the Data Protection and Privacy Office (DPO), this session highlighted the strategic initiatives and milestones necessary to protect the country’s digital spaces. The interactive Q&A session gave participants a chance to clarify concerns and deepen their understanding of Rwanda’s Data Protection and Privacy Law.
3. First Panel Discussions
The event featured a series of engaging panels tackling pressing issues in cybersecurity and data protection. Another panel addressed the overarching theme, “Navigating the Impact of Cybersecurity and Data Protection on Rwanda’s Development”, providing insights into how robust cybersecurity measures can serve as catalysts for economic growth.

One of the standout sessions was the unique, interactive workshop on Cybersecurity Best Practices. It had this Topic: Develop Practical Cybersecurity Strategies for Your Organization and it was facilitated by the National Cybersecurity Authority (NCSA), this hands-on workshop equipped participants with actionable strategies to strengthen organizational cybersecurity. Participants were actively involved in brainstorming and developing solutions tailored to real-world scenarios.
5. Second Panel Discussion and Q&A
Topic: Cultivating a Culture of Cybersecurity: Empowering Communities for Safer Digital Engagement
Panelists from: MTN, Rwanda Forensic Institute, Internet Society Chapter Rwanda, Digital Umuganda.
This session highlighted the human aspect of cybersecurity, focusing on education, awareness, and community-driven approaches to create safer digital spaces.
6. Data Protection Certificate Registration for SMEs
A major highlight of the event was the exclusive opportunity for SMEs to register for the Data Controller and Processor Certificates issued by the Data Protection and Privacy Office of Rwanda. This initiative aimed to enhance SMEs’ compliance with the national Data Protection Law, empowering them to build trust and credibility with clients. Many participants expressed gratitude for the clarity provided around data protection requirements and the significance of these certificates.

The event concluded with an engaging live demonstration from our expert, showcasing hidden tracking features and practical tips on securing personal data.
